Gemini app reaches 1 billion monthly users, matching ChatGPT's June milestone

Google's Gemini app has passed 1 billion monthly active users, CEO Sundar Pichai said in a post on X on August 11. Pichai called it one of the fastest-growing products in the company and noted that it is the 14th Google product to reach the 1 billion monthly user mark.

The timing keeps Gemini in step with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in June, according to data reported by Reuters. For anyone tracking which assistant becomes the default, the gap between the two now fits inside a single quarter.

One caveat on the number itself: it refers to the standalone Gemini app. It does not count the users of Google's AI Mode in Search, which the company says has its own audience of over 1 billion monthly active users, nor the Gemini features embedded in Workspace or Android.

How the app is being used

Google also released a few numbers on actual usage. According to the company, 63% of Gemini users talk to the assistant using the voice feature, and the app generates more than 150 million images every day. Outside Google's own ecosystem, the app counts more than 100 million active users on iOS, the company says.

Both figures point to a specific pattern. A voice-first majority suggests a large share of sessions happens hands-free, in the car or while moving, rather than as a typing exercise at a desk. An image output of 150 million per day means the app carries real multimodal workload, not just text chat. These are Google's own measurements, but they are the most concrete signals yet of what people do with the assistant.

A fast climb, and a practical read

The climb to the milestone was fast. On its Q2 2026 earnings call, Google reported more than 950 million monthly Gemini users and said daily active users had tripled over the past year, which puts the final 50 million inside roughly three weeks. The announcement also landed ahead of the company's Made by Google event, where more Gemini-powered features are expected on Pixel devices. On the model side, the rollout kept moving, with Gemini 3.5 Flash shipping earlier this year, a model Google says is aimed at coding and autonomous agent tasks.

Every number above is self-reported by Google, announced through Pichai's post and summarized by TechCrunch. Independent measurement of app-level usage is rare in this space, so the figures are best treated as company data. The read that matters for a team building on top of assistants: the Gemini app is now a distribution channel reaching as many users as ChatGPT, and an audience that size is what integration planning should factor in.
