Anthropic's Claude Frontier Academy: a $100M residency for enterprise engineers
Anthropic is putting $100 million into a program to train 10,000 "Frontier Deployed Engineers" inside the companies that use Claude, with the target date at the end of 2027. The vehicle is the Claude Frontier Academy, and its first program, the Frontier Deployed Engineer (FDE) Residency, is already running cohorts in San Francisco, New York and London, with engineers nominated by Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley and Novo Nordisk.
The premise is the talent problem. Per Anthropic's description, the people who can make AI work inside a real business are the hardest to hire, and inside customer companies a small group of highly skilled engineers produces an outsized share of what AI delivers. The academy is built from Anthropic's own experience deploying Claude in large enterprises and the consulting firms that serve them.
Who the residency is for
The program targets hands-on software engineers with strong fundamentals and a record of building with LLMs. Prior experience building AI agents is not required, according to the company. Selection works by nomination: organizations put forward their strongest engineers, and each one arrives with a named Claude project to lead when they go back to their firm.
A medical-school model
The structure borrows from how doctors train: learn from practitioners, work real cases, get assessed before practicing alone. The sequence is:
- A multi-day in-person program with Anthropic engineers and licensed instructors.
- A simulated enterprise deployment, from picking the right use case through security review to handover.
- A graded practical on a new scenario. Those who pass earn the Claude Resident Engineer badge.
- A 12-week residency leading a real Claude use case at the engineer's own organization, with support from Anthropic engineers.
- A second assessment at the end. Those who pass earn the Claude Frontier Deployed Engineer badge, with the first expected in early 2027.
The numbers behind it
The academy builds on the Claude Partner Network, where professionals across 46,000 firms have earned more than 175,000 Claude certifications and close to 4,000 people have completed Basecamp, an immersive program that teaches the same curriculum Anthropic's own Applied AI teams get at onboarding. In the company's framing, the 10,000 FDEs are a first step: the academy aims at the people who will lead deployments, not just at certified users.
A few partner quotes double as claims. The CTO of Commonwealth Bank of Australia says his teams produced up to 3x more code changes over the past year, according to his statement in the announcement. That is an internal number, not one Anthropic verifies.
What this means for your organization
If you are an engineer, the entry point to the residency is your organization's Anthropic account team or Partner Account Manager. Eligibility is by nomination, so the practical move is for your company to ask whether it qualifies.
For organizations, the signal is that Anthropic is investing in adoption capacity inside its customers, not only in shipping models. The $100 million and the 2027 target are commitments from Anthropic, not results, but the shape of the program, a residency with badges and a named project on return, is something an enterprise can budget against.
